Penitentiary officials in Atwater are allowing a little more prisoner movement after the killing of an officer June 20.

ATWATER -- U.S. Penitentiary Atwater has begun lifting a prisonwide lockdown that's been in place since two inmates stabbed and killed a correctional officer there two months ago, a prison spokesman said Tuesday.

"The institution has begun a slow, gradual transition period toward restoring institution operations," spokesman Miguel Chavez said in an e-mail Tuesday. "For the present time, the lockdown continues under slightly modified conditions."

Physicians sent woman home, then she died in the hospital the next day.

A Merced woman who came to Mercy Medical Center Merced with chest and abdominal pains on Friday was sent home by physicians.

She died early the next morning.

GUSTINE -- City leaders are pitching a three-quarter-cent sales tax hike to bandage a bleeding budget.

Voters will decide the fate of the Gustine Vital City Services Protection Measure on the Nov. 4 ballot. The money would go into the city's general fund to bridge the gap caused by shrinking revenues, disappearing state grants and higher costs.
